Once upon a time, a group of people decided to grow a business. They needed many things before their dream could come true: a business identity, a logo, a Web site, brochures, sales presentations, photographs, online videos … and much more. So they began to do what most people trying to grow a business do: they hired professionals. A Web design firm, a firm to create their logo, a copywriter, a consultant specializing in sales presentations, a photographer, a flash animation firm, and more. Soon, their list of vendors was very big. “We will grow a beautiful business,” they said.
But then the work began to come in. The expensive Web site was not at all what they desired; it also seemed to need endless fixes. The logo design firm, while promising a unique, creative logo, provided the same canned theme, variations of which plagued the logos of most other businesses in the industry. The writer, although supposedly equipped with an English degree, provided work any English teacher we know would have rejected. The photographer worked a “real job” in the day, so connecting for photo shoots became an ongoing, daily problem.
The group was very sad. The work they did receive, when they finally received it, was of poor quality, consistently. And dealing with so many professionals and so many egos and so many rounds of revisions and edits and changes seemed to take so much time—there wasn’t much left for growing their business.
